Denali 2008 - leave Dan a positive message!

The intention of this blog is to leave positive and motivational messages for Dan Hopkins so he can return home safe and sound!

Dan is attempting to summit the highest peak in North America and one of the most dangerous mountains in the world because of its location, weather conditions, physical demanding and unpredicable.

I believe that the positive thinking can travel a long way and give Dan the energy he needs to be safe!

Leave a message for Dan here!

Dan,
I think that on Saturday you got to see the power of your own strength and energy. May the combination of the two, inspire you along your journey like they seem to inspire all of those around you.

Cant wait to see and hear some stories.

Some quotes from Hudson Stuck about the first summit of Denali:

Walter, who had been in the lead all day, was the first to scramble up; a native Alaskan, he is the first human being to set foot upon the top of Alaska's great mountain, and he had well earned the lifelong distinction.
Hudson Stuck

We took a straight course up the great snow ridge.

Oh, Danny Boy! Thinking of you and Simone as well as your gang on the mountain. We sure are talking about you, buddy. Michael and Shawn are going on the next trek. Rick Miller and Charlie are going to train them. I think Wayne Graham is going to be the GM (that's unless the Sens offer him the GM job for next season).

In case you actually do see this today... Detroit vs. Pittsburgh, Game 6 on tonight! Detroit leads 3 games to 2.

Be safe, eat and sleep well, and we sure can't wait to see you!

Hi Dan,

We think of you everyday and throw positive thoughts in to the universe....

There are those that 'talk', and there are those that 'do'. Thank you for 'doing', in the name of those children who deserve the best so that they too, can 'do'.

Hugs from Anna & Dean

Hey there, Danny Boy! Have been checking the site regularly to see the expedition journal to get a rough idea of where you are. Seems that you are at 10,000 ft now. According to the map... you're a fine way up!

Detroit won the Stanley Cup and Danny Cleary is now the first Newfoundlander to ever have his name on the Cup. Big deal for the folks at home!

We're having a party to celebrate Michael's new dog (Charlie). He gets him on June 14, but our party will be on June 21 over at Don's. Imagine how many beers we'll need for the Oak Happy Hour gang! Yikes! Should be a good laugh!

Hope you are well and that you're enjoying your challenge. Can't wait for the next update on the site, buddy!

All the best on this hot, muggy Friday! Kind of hard to think of you in the snow and ice!

Greetings from Ottawa, Danny Boy! So, it's Tuesday morning here and I'm anxiously awaiting the next expedition update about the summit. I tell ya, I get great ideas for meals by checking these updates! I think I'll have the same breakfast as you guys on the weekend. I'll call it the Denali Breakfast! Had lobster at the Oak... really good! I think your weather there is better than what we're having here. Drag.

Anyway, the Sens have a new coach (Craig Hartsburg) and I'll let you wait and talk to Wayne all about that one ;)

I wonder what thoughts are going through your mind as you are literally approaching the apex. Bet your uncle is smiling on you now with big, big love and excitement.

Do take good care and hope you have been taking pictures, buddy.

All the best, and you can keep the snow!

Dear Dan,
Please know that you are in our thoughts daily. We are so proud of what you have accomplished and teaching us to "focus on the journey, not the destination... joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it."
Audrey misses her uncle very much and can't wait to give you a big hug and kiss when you get back ;)
Be well,

Dan,
You did it!!! We knew you would. Congratulations - we're so very proud. Your rock started in a field in Scotland when you were a little boy - your courage then got you to the top - and, oh how you tried. Today that 'little boy' became one hell of a man.
Loads of Love,
Mum and Kev XX

Danny Boy on top of the world! Saw Simone yesterday evening and got the great news! I can't imagine the elation! To have put in a year of dedication, sacrifice, determination, and just the sheer energy every day... Dan... few people can ever claim such a feat throughout a lifetime. Congratulations to you and all the people who made this possible with you. By the way, you should have seen Simon's BIG, BIG smile yesterday. Awesome!

Dan,

Oh Danny boy, the pipes the, pipes are calling

From Glen to Glen and down THE MOUNTAIN SIDE

The summer's here and all the flowers are a bloomin

Tis you, tis you, must go and I must bide

You climbed me well just like ye great ol uncle

Even when mother earth challenged ye day by day

'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow

Oh Danny Boy, Oh Danny Boy, I love you so.

I am in awe of your emotional, spiritual, and physical dedication.

Love to you Gail

hello everyone,

I am safe and sound down off the mountain with all my fingers and toes!

The whole experience has been earth moving. As you know we reached the summit a few days ago. The last two miles of the ascent were exhausting and at times we almost had to turn around.

There were a few things that kept us going. One was the view of the 'Archdeacon's Tower' named after Stuck. As we passed it the weather settled enough for a final push to the top. It was incredible as we all thought we were done. Another was the flush of emotion that grounds you when faced with such a beautiful and challenging part of nature. All the love and positive energy that i have experienced in my life seemed to hit me in a wave. During the hardest part of the climb i honestly felt like i was out for a seaside walk on a sunny day. At one point i could not see a thing because my eyes were frozen with tears. Not good when you are balancing yourself on a summit ridge only a foot wide. I am so in love with life...thank you all for being a part of this...yah mon!

Simone and i will meet up tomorrow
for a week of down time in Alaska. We will make a push up north to visit Fort Yukon and Stuck's gravesite. Then down south for a short glacial cruise off the coast.

Thank you to everyone who has reached inside themselves to join us in this journey to support life. When we truly give into ourselves and each other to help other people, amazing things can happen.

Many people have tried to make it to the top of Denali this year and have not made it for so many different reasons. Our team was one of the fortunate ones and i truly feel that it was not just because of the eight climbers on the mountain, but rather the hearts of many that sent us positive energy from a far.

I can't wait to see you all soon,

One Love,

daniel OXOX
